On the U7
The time I spent on the subway when I went to high school and college adds up to 3.25 months in total. That doesn’t include the rides to go clubbing or meeting friends. Three full month of my adolescent life. About 2340 hours. Most of them spent listening to music and drinking coffee. There was even a time when my friends and I hung out at a U7 subway station for hours after school every day.
Subway rides are glum and bleak affairs. Except for few drunken joy rides at night, there is not much action or perkiness. The smell is specific, the light is artificial and bright. Everyone is in transition, physically and mentally.
Yet, the U7 is the connection from my parents’ place to the city. The bright blue line I used to ride so often to school and work. It was and is still today a conduit to the life here in Berlin.
